101 undergraduates participated in the data collection last spring, giving information on overly positive automatic thoughts and other measures. ![]() The present study used baseline measures for ADHD and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) surveys to gather in the moment data on HF and inattention. ![]() The three main hypotheses explored in this paper are that ADHD positively predicts HF in the moment, HF in the moment negatively predicts inattention in the moment, and that the correlation between HF and inattention is made even more negative when ADHD moderates the relationship. The present study adds to existing research by examining how HF differentially impacts ADHD populations compared to non-ADHD populations. Hyperfocus (HF) is a concept that has heavily been associated with ADHD however, it is not part of any diagnostic criteria and the literature pertaining to HF is rather underdeveloped. This program is part of the "Exploring the Mind" series and is a partnership with The University of Michigan Department of Psychology.Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder marked by patterns of inattention and hyperactivity. She is an avid reader and the mother of two children, one in college and one in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. She has received funding from numerous federal agencies and foundations such as the Institute for Educational Sciences, the National Institute of Aging, the National Science Foundation, and the Spencer Foundation. Shah has edited three books and published over 60 articles and book chapters. Current projects include studies of improving scientific reasoning in middle school children, correcting false beliefs about science, the impact of math anxiety on math learning, and improving attention and motivation in children with ADHD. She studies how students learn and limitations in student learning. She completed her PhD at Carnegie Mellon University and her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Priti Shah is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan in cognition and cognitive neuroscience and educational psychology. ![]() Finally, Dr Shah will speculate on clinical and academic implications of this research. She will also discuss data suggesting that individuals with ADHD, when motivated, may actually show periods of intense focus (often dubbed hyperfocus) this intense focus can have benefits (e.g., for the creative process) and costs (e.g., procrastination), and she will briefly describe ongoing research on attention interventions for ADHD children. ![]() Specifically, individuals with ADHD exhibit enhanced "divergent" thinking, and this thinking style is associated with greater creative achievement in some domains. In this talk, Dr Shah will present data suggesting that one of these benefits may be exceptional creativity. At the same time, the attentional disregulation associated with ADHD may have some positive consequences. ADHD may contribute to functional impairment in academic, vocational, and social situations.
